Mikel Arteta acknowledges that William Saliba has surpassed all his previous expectations as the Frenchman prepares to commit to a long-term deal with Arsenal, confirming the defender as a key cornerstone.
Saliba joined Arsenal in 2019 but spent three years on loan at Saint-Etienne, Nice, and Marseille before making his official debut. Since the 2022/23 season, he has become Arteta’s first-choice center-back. Now, at 24 years old, Saliba is regarded as one of the Premier League’s top defenders, forming a perfect partnership with Gabriel Magalhaes.
Before the match against Newcastle, Arteta was asked about his expectations for Saliba, and he responded very candidly: “The truth is Saliba has exceeded everything I expected. Initially, we had different ideas about his development path, but eventually, we found common ground and began working together. With the right environment and full team support, Saliba has unlocked his full potential.”
The Spanish coach also emphasized his player’s remarkable progress: “At this age, what Saliba has achieved is truly impressive. He is becoming more consistent and maturing both as a person and in his role within the team. Now, Saliba is a crucial element in all our successes.”
While Saliba’s current contract runs until 2027, Arsenal is preparing to announce a new five-year extension. This not only demonstrates the club’s absolute faith in Saliba but also confirms his own choice amid interest from major clubs, including Real Madrid.
Arteta also mentioned that having many players like Saliba wanting to stay at Arsenal is a positive sign: “It means they are happy, they feel valued, and they see this as the best place to continue their careers and pursue their ambitions with the club.”
Saliba has played a major role in Arsenal finishing in the Premier League’s top two over the past three seasons. He has become the foundation that helped the Gunners return to the title race, competing evenly with England’s biggest powers.
Ahead of a tough away game at St James’ Park, where Arsenal suffered three consecutive defeats, Arteta highlighted the importance of players like Saliba. He believes that with the return of key players, possibly including Martin Odegaard after injury, Arsenal will have the strength to rewrite their head-to-head history.
From a player who had to spend years “training away,” William Saliba has now become an irreplaceable figure in Arsenal’s revival journey. With special recognition from coach Arteta, the new contract is only a matter of time to officially confirm the French defender’s status at Emirates.
