Coach Alonso is extremely excited ahead of the Madrid derby

Coach Xabi Alonso made significant remarks at the pre-match press conference ahead of the Atletico Madrid versus Real Madrid game.

After a series of impressive performances since the start of the season, Real Madrid aims for their seventh consecutive La Liga victory as they travel to Metropolitano to face their city rivals Atletico Madrid in round 7.

For Coach Xabi Alonso, this will be his first time managing a Madrid city derby from the sidelines. During the pre-match press conference, the Spanish tactician expressed his excitement about the upcoming clash and emphasized that he does not feel pressured about the journey ahead.

Specifically, he stated: "Regarding the preparation for the match, we maintain our usual approach. However, this is a derby, where the atmosphere and excitement are always unique. Tomorrow, we will face a passionate and challenging environment, which demands the team to play with maximum energy and focus to secure the win.

Derbies always bring a special feeling. Even days before the match, you can clearly sense the intense atmosphere in the city. Knowing the significance of the game gives you extra motivation and a strong desire to perform well, both individually and as a team...

I prefer to take things step by step without setting overly ambitious goals. We have had a good start, but the road ahead is still long. Let’s wait and see."

Additionally, the 43-year-old coach believes Real Madrid’s style of play still needs improvement to reach a higher level.

He explained: "We have achieved many positive things and need to continue strengthening them. When in possession, the more flexible and unpredictable we are, the more effective our attacks become, as we have multiple options rather than a single style. Defensively, the team has also made significant progress, and we must not lose that."

Furthermore, when asked whether Vinicius, Mbappe, and Mastantuono are his preferred attacking trio, Alonso responded: "My answer remains the same as last week. We have many options, and all are important. The three players who start have performed well, but those who are not in the starting lineup are also quality players and always ready."

Currently, Real Madrid leads La Liga with a perfect 18 points, two points ahead of defending champions Barcelona in second place. Therefore, a victory against their city rivals would help the Royal Club consolidate their top position and demonstrate their superior strength compared to the rest.

The match between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid will take place at 21:15 tonight (September 27).
