Despite Chiesa’s equalizer, Liverpool were defeated 1-2 at Crystal Palace because of a critical defensive mistake near the end.
Liverpool traveled to Selhurst Park determined to secure three points, but they ended up leaving empty-handed after a bitter 1-2 loss to Crystal Palace. Once again, defensive instability cost The Reds dearly.
From the start, the home team began energetically. In the 9th minute, Ismaila Sarr quickly finished after a rebound inside the box to give Palace a 1-0 lead. Liverpool tried to respond with dangerous chances from Gravenberch and Konate, but goalkeeper Dean Henderson made excellent saves. Even Alisson had to intervene to block consecutive shots from Daniel Munoz and Jean-Philippe Mateta.
The first half ended in a tense battle, with Liverpool struggling and Crystal Palace exploiting defensive lapses to the fullest. In the second half, coach Arne Slot made substitutions, bringing on Cody Gakpo, Curtis Jones, and Federico Chiesa to boost the attack. This tactical change had an immediate impact.
Ismaila Sarr opened the scoring for Palace in the 9th minute
In the 87th minute, Chiesa scored a decisive goal inside the box after a chaotic play, leveling the score at 1-1. This was the Italian forward’s first goal for Liverpool, reigniting hope for The Reds. However, tragedy struck just minutes later.
In the 90+8th minute, from a powerful throw-in by Marc Guehi, the ball reached Eddie Nketiah inside the box. The Palace striker did not miss, slotting a clean finish to make it 2-1. VAR was consulted to verify the goal’s validity, but the goal was ultimately confirmed.
Chiesa equalized but it wasn’t enough to secure a point for Liverpool
Liverpool pushed forward in the final moments but failed to change the outcome. Defensive lapses and a loss of focus at crucial moments proved costly.
Meanwhile, Crystal Palace can take pride in their brave performance. Coach Oliver Glasner’s team maximized their home advantage, played with discipline, and ruthlessly punished the opponent’s mistakes. With this vital 3-point haul, Palace showed they can challenge any top team in the Premier League.
Liverpool will need to quickly shore up their defense if they want to avoid further struggles in the challenging period ahead.
