Manchester United remains disappointing following a 3-1 defeat to Brentford, accompanied by a number of concerning stats during Ruben Amorim’s tenure.
In the previous round, Man United regained momentum with a win against Chelsea. However, just a week later, they immediately “plummeted” while visiting Brentford. Igor Thiago scored twice in the first half, stunning the visitors, before Benjamin Sesko managed to reduce the deficit to temporarily salvage some pride before halftime.
Nonetheless, hopes were short-lived as Mathias Jensen scored the decisive goal for the home team in the second half, sealing a 3-1 victory. With this loss, Man United dropped to 13th place in the Premier League standings, having earned only 7 points from 5 matches.
The problem for Amorim is not just the results but also the shocking numbers behind them. According to talkSPORT, since Ruben Amorim took over Manchester United in November 2024, no team in the Premier League has conceded the opening goal more times than the Red Devils. They have fallen behind 21 times during that period.
Worse still, after 33 Premier League games in charge, he has never won two consecutive matches. Amorim’s record in England’s top flight stands at just 9 wins, 7 draws, and 17 losses, a worrying statistic for an ambitious club like Manchester United.
The defeat to Brentford also marked the 200th match in Amorim’s managerial career. Ironically, after only 33 Premier League games, he has lost more matches than during his entire spell in Portugal: 17 losses in England, compared to 14 losses over 167 matches in the Primeira Liga.
One rare positive is the performance of new signing Benjamin Sesko , who scored his first goal for the club since joining for £74 million. The 22-year-old striker showed clear improvement by getting more involved in the game, taking 6 shots, 4 of which were on target, all within the first half.
This achievement makes Sesko the first Manchester United player to have 4 or more shots on target in the first half of a Premier League match since Cristiano Ronaldo did so against West Ham in 2021. However, Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty when the score was 1-2, causing a missed opportunity for a comeback.
Speaking on TNT Sports, Ruben Amorim admitted the team failed completely at critical moments: “We wanted to win, but we couldn’t control the match. We played Brentford’s way: long balls, aerial duels, set pieces. The crucial moments went against us.”
