Coach Ruben Amorim claims he remains "confident" that he can reverse Manchester United’s fortunes this season, despite the team suffering their third loss in six opening matches.
The 3-1 defeat to Brentford leaves Coach Ruben Amorim with just 34 points from 33 Premier League games. However, Amorim insists he still believes in achieving success at Old Trafford despite the current disappointing results.
"I always feel comfortable with my role. I’m not worried; that’s not my decision," he said. "I will do my best every minute I’m here. I never worry about my job; I’m not that kind of person. I always do my work. When we win, my mood changes. That’s normal, but I always stay confident because I know what I have to do. I always carry a lot of responsibility on my shoulders."
Coach Amorim admits MU must improve: "We can play better and need to play better. Everything is like a cycle of ups and downs. When you win, you feel everything, motivation is present. When you lose, you return to the starting point and must fight for a win to create momentum again. I can’t say more than what I say after every loss. Sometimes you see a team play very well and show signs of progress. But other times, there are matches where you don’t see that improvement. This gives me confidence to say Manchester United will come back. So the conversation is always the same. Everything depends on the next match. Let’s try to win the next game and improve some things."
Amorim confirms he still believes in the possibility of success at Old Trafford.
Amorim showed frustration when Igor Thiago scored two goals within the first 20 minutes, despite his detailed preparations for MU to face Brentford. "We conceded from transition plays we were aware of during the week and had trained to fix. These are areas we need to improve. We worked on everything. What’s disappointing is that every goal conceded today came from situations we practiced during the week. We played Brentford’s way throughout the match. When you see a game like this, it’s hard to describe. We never managed to stabilize our style, which is very different from what we expected today."
Benjamin Sesko scored to reduce the deficit with his first goal for MU, but the turning point came in the 76th minute when Nathan Collins fouled Bryan Mbeumo inside the penalty area. Referee Craig Pawson awarded a penalty to MU but only showed a yellow card to the Brentford defender. However, Bruno Fernandes missed the chance to equalize at 2-2 as his penalty was saved by goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. Later, Mathias Jensen scored the decisive goal for Brentford during stoppage time to secure a 3-1 win.
Amorim commented on the penalty incident: "The referee told me Bryan didn’t control the ball. I think he lost control because he was pulled down. That’s the referee’s decision. Once again, especially in moments like this, I don’t want to focus on the referee. We scored, then missed a penalty. These key moments can change a match. It’s hard to say if we deserved it or not. We never stabilized during the game, but we should have scored from the penalty."
The defeat to Brentford is a severe setback for MU’s ambitions under Ruben Amorim’s reign. Although the Portuguese coach remains confident and unconcerned about his future, the team’s unimpressive performance shows there is still much work ahead to regain their stature.
