Coach Kim Sang Sik gains another talented midfielder for Vietnam U23 team

Midfielder Nguyễn Thái Quốc Cường (Công an TPHCM) is performing impressively in the V-League 2025/26. He has voiced his wish to earn an opportunity with the Vietnam U23 team.

On the evening of September 27, Công an TPHCM club made a remarkable comeback against SLNA, winning 3-2 overall and officially taking the top spot on the league table with 13 points.

Notably, in this match, the police team’s midfielder born in 2004, Nguyễn Thái Quốc Cường, once again shone brightly. In the 64th minute, the player, known as "Công Phượng’s cousin," unleashed an impressive shot from outside the penalty area to seal the 3-2 victory for the visitors.

This was Quốc Cường’s second consecutive match scoring for Công an TPHCM. In the previous game, he scored the goal that put CATPHCM ahead 2-1 against Becamex TPHCM early in the second half. Interestingly, both goals were decisive in securing victories for coach Lê Huỳnh Đức’s squad.

Quốc Cường is known for his versatility and adaptability. The 2004-born player can operate in various attacking roles such as central midfielder, attacking midfielder, or even on the wing if needed. With his skillful technique, aggressive spirit, and decisiveness, Quốc Cường is showing remarkable development this season.

After the match, Quốc Cường stated: "This goal helped the team win, so I’m very happy. Returning to play in my hometown, although I love and respect it greatly, once I wear the Công an TPHCM jersey, I always give my all."

Not only at the club level, if he continues to work hard and perform impressively, Quốc Cường could become a "fresh breeze" in the Vietnam U23 squad for SEA Games 33 and the upcoming AFC U23 Championship. When asked about his national team ambitions, Cường said: "Like every player, my teammates and I would feel extremely honored if called up to the national team."

In the past, the midfielder from Nghệ An has been included in the Vietnam U23 training squad under coach Philippe Troussier.
