Erling Haaland is soon going to make Ronaldo just a name of the past.

Striker Erling Haaland is anticipated to shatter Cristiano Ronaldo’s Champions League scoring record following his remarkable beginning with Man City in the 2025/26 campaign.

According to Opta, Haaland has scored in every Manchester City match this season except the game against Tottenham. Across all competitions, he has netted 9 goals in 7 appearances. Most recently, Haaland shone again with a brace and an assist, playing a key role in Man City’s 5-1 home victory over Burnley at the Etihad Stadium. This marks a strong comeback after his inconsistent 2024/25 season, which was seen as one of the main reasons for the team’s trophyless campaign.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, former Scotland international Ally McCoist praised Haaland’s performance as follows: “It’s crazy that we’re even discussing Erling Haaland potentially breaking Cristiano Ronaldo’s Champions League record. I never thought Ronaldo’s record could be surpassed (Cristiano Ronaldo currently holds the record as the greatest Champions League scorer with 140 goals). But if Haaland maintains perfect fitness and his strong desire, he can absolutely break that record and many others as well.

I even think Alan Shearer would hope Haaland moves to Real Madrid or Barcelona as soon as possible to protect his Premier League goal-scoring record. I know Alan Shearer well, and he would definitely be worried seeing Haaland approach his record if he keeps scoring consistently like now.”

Additionally, McCoist was particularly impressed by Haaland’s more well-rounded style of play: “I’m not saying he will turn into Zidane – a player who can spin and dribble past 2-3 defenders. That’s not Haaland’s style, and the way a striker plays is always very different from a midfielder. But what surprises me is his defensive ability. Haaland often drops deep, wins aerial battles inside his own penalty area, showing great team spirit.”

According to McCoist, Man City seem to prefer counter-attacking this season, which suits Haaland perfectly:“If teams dare to play more openly, Man City can adapt and use flexible tactics. They might play with a deeper defensive line. This would give Man City more chances to counterattack, which is the perfect scenario for Haaland. His goal against Arsenal clearly demonstrates what we are talking about. When there is space, he almost certainly scores.”
