The MU women's squad secured an impressive 2-0 victory away at Liverpool in the Women's Super League (WSL). Two first-half goals by Hinata Miyazawa and Ella Toone secured all three points for the "Red Devils," highlighting their dominance in play and resilience against a Liverpool team still struggling to find form early in the season.
Right from the opening moments, MU showed clear intent to control the game. Just four minutes after kickoff, Miyazawa fired a confident shot from outside the box, which brushed the post before settling into the net past goalkeeper Rafaela Borggrafe. This early strike allowed coach Marc Skinner’s players to easily manage the match, dominate possession, and continually pressure Liverpool’s defense.
Meanwhile, Liverpool came into the game buoyed by a strong 5-0 League Cup win over Sunderland midweek. Coach Gareth Taylor made four personnel changes, notably bringing back captain Grace Fisk and center-back Gemma Bonner. However, these plans quickly fell apart due to defensive mistakes and poor ball control. The home team held just 32% possession in the first half and spent most of the time retreating under constant pressure from their opponents.

Liverpool also suffered a personnel blow when defender Lily Woodham was injured early and had to be substituted after only 18 minutes. This disruption further challenged the Reds’ defensive stability. Nevertheless, they managed a few rare chances. In the 44th minute, Ceri Holland unleashed a sudden shot that deflected off a MU player, but goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce reacted swiftly to make the save.
Shortly after, MU delivered the decisive strike. In first-half stoppage time, from a quick counterattack, Ella Toone broke free to face the goalkeeper and finished skillfully to extend the lead to 2-0. This goal extinguished Liverpool’s hopes of a comeback and ended a half in which they were completely outmatched.
In the second half, Liverpool made changes by bringing on young forward Mia Enderby to inject speed and unpredictability into their attack. The home side improved, creating several dangerous moments. Kapocs and Enderby both had one-on-one chances against keeper Tullis-Joyce, but lacked the decisiveness and precision needed to convert.
Despite their efforts, Liverpool failed to score an equalizer. This loss deepens their crisis as they remain without points after the first three WSL rounds, having already been defeated by Everton and Leicester. Meanwhile, MU proved they are still serious contenders for this season’s championship.
