Matthijs de Ligt insists that Manchester United players share the blame for the club's disappointing recent performances.
Matthijs de Ligt emphasizes that Manchester United players have to hold themselves accountable for the recent bad outcomes amid growing pressure on coach Ruben Amorim.
Last weekend, Man United suffered their third defeat in six Premier League matches, losing 1-3 at Brentford.
The Portuguese coach has yet to secure two consecutive Premier League wins after 10 months in charge. Last season, the "Red Devils" finished 15th, their lowest since 1989/90, and they remain in the bottom half of the table.
Center-back Matthijs de Ligt states that blaming the coach entirely is unfair; players also need to reflect on themselves.
“Of course, people often find it easy to blame the coach, but ultimately it is the players on the pitch who must deliver,” De Ligt shared. “You can't say goals conceded or missed chances are solely due to tactics. It’s also about focus, and if that’s lacking at critical moments, the result changes.”
After a 2-1 win over Chelsea last week, the Red Devils seemed to regain spirit. But against Brentford, Igor Thiago scored twice within 20 minutes, Benjamin Sesko narrowed the gap, and then Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty—his second miss from the spot this season.
De Ligt acknowledged: “It’s understandable to feel disappointed because we talked all week about maintaining momentum. But football is like that; losing this match was a big shock. Sometimes we repeat old mistakes. The most important thing is to unite and analyze what went wrong to fix it.”
Next round, Man United will host Sunderland before visiting Liverpool right after the international break on October 19. Winning is an essential task for the entire team at this time.
