Chess player Lai Ly Huynh and the Vietnamese Xiangqi team will return home on the night of September 28 following the conclusion of the 2025 World Championship with a record-breaking performance.
On the evening of September 28, the Xiangqi team will land in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, with the world champion Lai Ly Huynh arriving on a flight to Ho Chi Minh City.
Team leader Mr. Nguyen Minh Thang stated that the entire team remains in high spirits after their brilliant success at the tournament held in China. This marks the first time Vietnam has claimed the world championship title in the men's individual standard Xiangqi category, with the gold medal awarded to Lai Ly Huynh.
This year, the Vietnamese delegation brought home 1 gold medal, 1 silver medal, and 1 bronze medal. This accomplishment clearly demonstrates the significant progress of Vietnamese Xiangqi on the international stage. Last year, Lai Ly Huynh reached the finals but only secured second place. This time, he triumphed over all opponents to stand on the top podium.
Immediately after his victory, Lai Ly Huynh received a cash reward of 1.1 billion VND from former President of the Vietnamese Xiangqi Federation Nguyen Huu Luan. Meanwhile, veteran player Nguyen Thanh Bao was also awarded 100 million VND for his contributions during the tournament.
The Vietnamese Xiangqi team participating this year included experienced players such as Lai Ly Huynh, Nguyen Thanh Bao, Dam Thi Thuy Dung, and Kieu Bich Thuy in the championship category.
This achievement not only highlights Lai Ly Huynh’s personal success but also marks a new milestone for Vietnamese Xiangqi, confirming its increasingly solid position on the global map.
