Malaysia admits for the first time to errors in the naturalization process

FAM officially admits to administrative errors during the submission of naturalized player files to FIFA.

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has formally acknowledged mistakes in the submission of documents related to naturalized players to FIFA. This announcement was made on FAM’s official website amid heightened attention from Southeast Asian football fans regarding recent naturalization issues.

In the official statement, FAM declared: “The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) is awaiting the full ruling from the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) before filing an appeal in accordance with proper procedures and current legal regulations.

FAM wishes to inform that we have identified technical errors in the submission process carried out by the administrative department. We take this matter very seriously. However, FAM emphasizes that all involved naturalized players are legitimate Malaysian citizens.”

FAM admits to errors in the naturalization process

Previously, the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and seven naturalized players faced severe sanctions after FIFA discovered forged documents used to field them in a crucial Asian Cup qualifying match. This occurred during the 4-0 victory over Vietnam’s national team in June 2025.

FIFA stated that its disciplinary committee found the Malaysian Football Association guilty of violating Article 22 of FIFA’s disciplinary code, which includes forgery and fraud. The governing body revealed that forged papers were submitted to verify the eligibility of these naturalized players in the match against Vietnam.

FAM’s proactive admission of fault indicates transparency and serves as a step to mitigate negative impacts amid public pressure. Nevertheless, this undeniably deals a significant blow to the organization’s reputation, which is currently undergoing reforms aimed at greater professionalism and efficiency.

While awaiting FIFA’s official response, FAM plans to continue legal and administrative steps to appeal. Malaysian football hopes the issue will be resolved, thereby preserving the team’s strength for future challenges.
