Chelsea's overlooked striker, David Datro Fofana, drew notice by netting a brace past goalkeeper Andre Onana, now playing for Trabzonspor on loan from Manchester United.
Andre Onana joined Trabzonspor in early September after a challenging spell at Manchester United. After two years at Old Trafford, the Cameroonian goalkeeper failed to prove himself as the first-choice keeper and eventually lost his spot to Altay Bayindir. The Red Devils even spent £18 million to sign Senne Lammens on the last day of the summer transfer window as a replacement for Onana.
However, since moving to Turkey, Onana has gradually regained confidence and shown consistent form with Trabzonspor. The former Inter Milan keeper contributed to his team’s 4-3 victory over Karagumruk on the evening of September 27. Yet, his joy was nearly overshadowed by Fofana’s unexpected brilliant performance.
The Ivorian striker was only brought on at the 66th minute replacing Andre Gray. With the match entering stoppage time and the score at 4-1 in favor of Trabzonspor, Fofana suddenly made an impact. In the 90+1 minute, he fired a shot from a tight angle that beat Onana in a situation where the goalkeeper could have done better. Just less than a minute later, capitalizing on a defensive mistake by Trabzonspor, Fofana quickly scored on the rebound, narrowing the gap to 4-3 and sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
Although he couldn’t help Karagumruk earn points, Fofana’s lightning-fast double right in front of Onana caused a media buzz. It also served as a reminder of the 22-year-old’s talent, once highly anticipated by Chelsea when signed from Molde in 2023. However, injuries and fierce competition at Stamford Bridge limited his chances. To date, Fofana has only made 4 appearances for Chelsea before being loaned out repeatedly to Union Berlin, Burnley, Goztepe, and now Karagumruk.
While Onana strives to revive his career in Turkey, Fofana is making the most of every minute on the pitch to prove himself. Scoring twice against a goalkeeper who has played in the Champions League like Onana will surely boost the young striker’s reputation with Chelsea and other European clubs.
