Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana has once again become the target of criticism after allowing young Chelsea forward David Datro Fofana to score twice in under a minute.
Despite Onana’s Trabzonspor clinching a narrow 4-3 victory over Fatih Karagümrük in the Turkish Süper Lig, the goalkeeper’s performance still raised many doubts.
Onana recently left Old Trafford to join a Turkish club on loan during the summer transfer window, following a long period of disappointment at Manchester United. Since arriving at the "Red Devils" with high expectations to replace David de Gea, the 29-year-old goalkeeper has repeatedly made crucial mistakes, losing his starting position to Altay Bayındır. The situation culminated with Manchester United spending £18 million to sign young goalkeeper Senne Lammens, signaling that Onana was no longer part of their long-term plans.
It seemed that in Turkey, Onana had regained his form with a series of impressive performances for Trabzonspor under coach Fatih Tekke. The recent match against Karagümrük unfolded favorably, with Onana’s team leading 4-1 during regular time. However, in stoppage time, an unexpected player turned Onana into the central figure in a disappointing way.
Onana was scored on twice by Fofana within one minute.
David Datro Fofana, a 21-year-old Ivorian forward on loan at Karagümrük from Chelsea, was brought on in the 66th minute to replace Andre Gray. During stoppage time, Fofana continuously troubled Trabzonspor’s defense and especially Andre Onana. He scored to narrow the score to 2-4 with a close-angle shot, a situation where Onana could have performed better. Less than a minute later, Fofana took advantage of a chaotic play to score his second goal, causing Trabzonspor to endure a tense finish to the match.
This is not the first time Onana has faced criticism in the Süper Lig. Previously, he conceded three goals in a single match without making a single successful save, with a save rate close to zero. Statistics indicate Onana has a negative expected goals against (xGA) value of -1.73, showing he frequently lets in goals that could have been prevented.
Meanwhile, David Datro Fofana is crafting an intriguing story. Having joined Chelsea from Molde in 2023, the Ivorian striker has yet to make a significant mark at Stamford Bridge and has been loaned out repeatedly to Union Berlin, Burnley, Göztepe, and now Karagümrük. Despite only four appearances for Chelsea, Fofana has demonstrated great potential with his speed and ability to seize opportunities. His quick brace against Onana within one minute will surely impress the "Blues" coaching staff.
As for Onana, although Trabzonspor currently sits second in the Süper Lig and is competing for the title with Galatasaray, the Cameroonian goalkeeper’s inconsistent form is a major concern. He will have further chances to prove himself in the upcoming match against Kayserispor, but if he fails to improve, his prospects of returning to peak performance remain uncertain.
From Manchester to Turkey, Andre Onana has yet to shake off the shadow of mistakes. And this time, the player causing him more trouble is none other than a Chelsea surplus – David Datro Fofana.
