Coach Arne Slot stood by Alexander Isak despite his underwhelming showing in his first Premier League appearance during Liverpool’s 1-2 loss to Crystal Palace.
Alexander Isak continued to receive support from coach Arne Slot after Liverpool’s winning streak was broken by a defeat to Crystal Palace. In his Premier League debut for The Reds, the Swedish striker faced criticism for an uninspiring performance, but Slot emphasized that the low tempo of the match limited Isak’s scoring chances. This is also a crucial period for Isak to prove his ability to adapt to the Premier League and gradually become a key component of Liverpool’s squad this season.
Coach Slot shared with the British media: "Isak playing 84 minutes was largely due to the low intensity of the game. When you face a team playing deep, with 10 players concentrated around their 18-yard box, and they take time to build up play at a relatively low pace." The Dutch tactician stressed that facing a deep defensive block makes it difficult for forwards like Isak to create breakthroughs: "In a more open match, where you have to run a lot as a number 9, you might not let him play 84 minutes, but this was a game against a low defensive block with only short counterattacks."
Although he did not score, Isak impressed with his attitude and professionalism. Coach Slot commented: "He nearly had a scoring chance, showing great enthusiasm in holding his position, only slightly pulled by the shirt which caused him to lose balance when shooting. It was probably just a minor tug enough to unbalance him. He didn’t score, but it was quite a decent performance."
Signed by Liverpool for £125 million, Isak is currently regaining his fitness and form. Experts note that adapting to the Premier League’s style is never easy for any newcomer, especially for highly anticipated players like Isak. In the coming period, he will have opportunities to prove his worth in key Premier League and Champions League matches.
Liverpool fans still hope for better performances from Isak as the team approaches important upcoming fixtures. Will the Swedish striker soon regain his peak form and become a vital piece for Liverpool?
