The 2-5 loss against Atletico Madrid highlighted not just Real Madrid’s fragile defense but also their excessive dependence on Kylian Mbappe to secure favorable outcomes.

Since the beginning of the season, Mbappe has shouldered almost the entire goal-scoring responsibility for Real Madrid. The French star has netted 10 out of the team’s total 18 goals, with the only match he failed to score being against Mallorca. Even in the heavy defeat at Wanda Metropolitano, Mbappe managed to leave his mark with a goal, while Arda Guler scored the other. This trend shows that when Real Madrid needs goals, most of the expectations fall on the 26-year-old striker’s shoulders.

Statistics from La Liga further clarify this: Mbappe has scored 8 goals from just 24 shots, 13 of which were on target. Besides him, only four other players—Guler, Eder Militao, Vinicius, and young talent Franco Mastantuono—have scored. Clearly, the limited contribution from the rest of the attack reduces Real’s diversity and makes them easier to predict.

The problem extends beyond finishing. The midfield lacks consistency in creating chances, resulting in other forwards, aside from Mbappe, being almost starved of the ball. The Madrid derby also revealed more concerns. The defense, once considered solid, was thoroughly exploited by Atletico, exposing dangerous gaps.
