CEO of Malaysia’s National Team admits being shocked by FIFA’s sanction

The Chief Executive Officer of Malaysia’s National Team has officially commented on the FIFA sanction.

Rob Friend, CEO of Malaysia’s National Team, expressed his shock at FIFA’s punishment against the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and seven naturalized national players. The official fanpage of Malaysia’s National Team also issued its first statement on the matter:

"We are stunned by FIFA’s decision and the unprecedented sanctions imposed on our players.

The Malaysian Football Association has addressed the administrative issues under review, and the national team remains fully supportive of the appeal process. As Malaysia’s National Team, our entire focus is on moving forward, preparing a strong squad for the upcoming qualifying matches against Laos, and ensuring our discipline, professionalism, and performance on the field continue to reflect the pride and spirit of our nation.

According to FIFA’s announcement, the Malaysian Football Association submitted eligibility verification documents to FIFA, including altered paperwork to register seven players: Gabriel Felipe Arrocha, Facundo Tomás Garcés, Rodrigo Julián Holgado, Imanol Javier Machuca, João Vitor Brandão Figueiredo, Jon Irazábal Iraurgui, and Hector Alejandro Hevel Serrano. These players participated in the match between Malaysia and Vietnam during the third round of the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers held on June 10, 2025, at Bukit Jalil Stadium.

After reviewing the evidence, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee decided to fine FAM 350,000 CHF (Swiss francs). Each of the seven involved players was fined 2,000 CHF and banned from football activities for 12 months from the date of the decision. Additionally, the players’ eligibility issues have been referred to the FIFA Football Tribunal for further examination.

According to regulations, FAM and the mentioned players have 10 days to request the detailed decision and may also appeal to FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Chamber under current rules.
