Bodo/Glimt vs Tottenham: Awaiting Kane’s brilliance, Palhinha’s revival at Tottenham

Few expected the newcomer Pafos to achieve any remarkable feat against a Bayern Munich team featuring striker Harry Kane in excellent form. For Tottenham, Joao Palhinha is the difference Thomas Frank has been waiting for, having rescued the team multiple times.

The first point earned in their opening match against Olympiakos can be considered a positive beginning for Pafos, one of the new entrants in this season’s Champions League. However, the next test for David Luiz and his teammates is a Bayern Munich side in unstoppable form, having won all seven matches across all competitions so far, including a 3-1 victory over Chelsea in the first qualifying round.

His recent brace against Werder Bremen helped the 1993-born striker reach 100 goals in 104 appearances for Bayern Munich, making him the fastest player to hit this milestone for a club in Europe’s top leagues, beating the previous records of Erling Haaland and Cristiano Ronaldo (105 matches). Kane certainly does not want to stop scoring, and facing a lesser-known team like Pafos gives the English striker a chance to add more goals and help Bayern Munich secure another win. Even though they travel to Cyprus tonight, Kompany’s squad remains a challenge too great for Pafos, as they have not scored fewer than three goals in any match this season. If Pafos manage to stop Kane and Bayern Munich from unleashing a goal storm at home, it would be a major achievement for Juan Carlos Carcedo’s team.

For Tottenham, the highlight under Thomas Frank currently is not the highly anticipated signings such as Mohammed Kudus or Xavi Simons, but rather the signing of Joao Palhinha, who was not in Bayern Munich’s plans this season but has been revived since joining North London. The Portuguese midfielder has gradually become an important part of Tottenham’s midfield, somewhat reflecting the qualities that made him notable during his two years at Fulham from 2022 to 2024. Above all, the 1995-born midfielder has frequently scored important goals for Tottenham. These include the winning goal in the 2-0 victory over Man City in August and most recently becoming the hero by saving Tottenham from a humiliating defeat against bottom-ranked Wolves with a spectacular goal in the 90+4 minute.

In a squad with many young players who have never experienced the Champions League, Palhinha’s presence greatly benefits Tottenham’s European journey. Tottenham’s opponent tonight is Bodo/Glimt, a familiar name as the two teams faced each other in last season’s Europa League semi-finals. Tottenham fans will be hoping for a more convincing display from Palhinha and his teammates compared to their lucky win over Villarreal in the opening round.
