Manchester United could make it easier for Liverpool to acquire a transfer target in the event they sack manager Ruben Amorim.
Crystal Palace is soaring in second place on the table and still maintaining an unbeaten record since the season began, which has increased the attention on coach Oliver Glasner. Meanwhile, Manchester United just suffered a 1-3 defeat at Brentford, intensifying the pressure on manager Ruben Amorim.
After the match, Glasner cleverly avoided questions about rumors linking him to United. If the "Red Devils" fire Amorim and manage to convince the FA Cup-winning coach to join Old Trafford, it could indirectly help Liverpool in their efforts to sign Marc Guehi.
According to TalkSPORT, Glasner is currently among three shortlisted candidates targeted by Manchester United, alongside former England manager Gareth Southgate and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola. Should Glasner leave, Guehi’s departure from Crystal Palace becomes more likely, which clearly benefits Liverpool.
Liverpool is reportedly very interested in Guehi and plans to wait until next summer when the English defender becomes a free agent. Although a last-minute deal failed in the recent transfer window, Guehi still hopes to move to Anfield.
There is no sign that Guehi will change his mind and sign a new contract with Palace. In fact, if Glasner leaves the club this season or when his contract expires next summer, Guehi’s chances of staying are almost zero.
Selhurst Park’s team is having a breakout season, climbing to second place in the Premier League. In contrast, Amorim and Manchester United struggle in 14th place after losing to Brentford. Finishing 15th last season, Amorim currently holds a 27.3% win rate, similar to Graham Potter’s record at West Ham before being replaced by Nuno Espirito Santo last weekend.
In an interview with Kicker, Glasner also declined to clarify his future. He stated: “I follow all the rumors, and that’s it. I remain calm, focus on daily work with the players and coaching staff, and try to enjoy everything as much as possible.”
At Liverpool, coach Arne Slot recently suffered a major defensive blow when new signing Giovanni Leoni, after an impressive debut, tore his anterior cruciate ligament in their 2-1 League Cup win over Southampton. The Italian defender will be sidelined for about a year, as Slot confirmed in the press conference before the match against Palace. However, he insisted this injury doesn’t change their winter transfer plans unless the team faces further injuries.
