PSG unexpectedly announced a jersey auction for the Champions League match against Barcelona, a humanitarian act connected to the heartfelt story of coach Luis Enrique.
The Champions League quarter-final between Barcelona and PSG promises excitement on the pitch and leaves a special mark off it. On Monday, PSG declared that all jerseys worn by players in the match against Barca will be auctioned. All proceeds will be donated to Fundación Xana, a charity supporting children with serious illnesses and their families. This gesture transforms the Barcelona-PSG clash into more than just a game; it carries a message of compassionate sharing.
Fundación Xana was established in Barcelona in November 2023, named after the youngest daughter of coach Luis Enrique — a little girl who passed away in August 2019 at age 9 after battling bone cancer. The foundation aims to support children with critical illnesses and their families, while spreading hope inspired by Enrique’s touching story. On the announcement day, he also introduced a special song in memory of his daughter.
Recalling the 5-0 victory over Inter that helped PSG win the Champions League for the first time, coach Luis Enrique changed into a black T-shirt printed with an image of him and his daughter Xana planting the PSG flag on the field. That emotional moment deepened after the trophy ceremony when a huge tifo appeared in the stands depicting Enrique and his late daughter.
The 55-year-old coach choked up and seemed about to cry at that moment: "Xana is always with family and friends every day, whether in victory or defeat, in good times or bad. That photo is beautiful, and I’m very grateful. Xana is always beside me, and today she will be running around here, a little older now. This is a wonderful day, with all family and friends. And when you make so many fans happy, that is ultimate happiness."
From a sporting perspective, Barcelona and PSG are two names linked to many classic encounters in Champions League history. After 14 meetings, each team has 5 wins, 4 draws, scoring 27 goals and conceding 27. However, in the last two visits to Catalunya, PSG won both times 4-1. Those memories surely fuel Barcelona’s desire to settle the score in this rematch, especially as they remain unbeaten this season and have lost only once in their last 20 home games. With the return of young talent Lamine Yamal, Blaugrana are even more confident welcoming the reigning European champions.
The upcoming match is not only a mental battle between two European powerhouses but also a place where football connects with humanitarian values. The image of PSG jerseys being auctioned for children with serious illnesses will surely resonate longer than the final whistle. After 90 thrilling minutes, how many positive values will this noble gesture spread?
