Why hasn't De Jong extended his contract with Barca?

Why is Frenkie de Jong still not signing a new contract with Barcelona? Despite mutual interest in continuing the partnership, the discussions have encountered difficulties and are not yet complete.

Barcelona's sporting director, Deco, has officially commented on the contract extension talks with Frenkie de Jong. The Dutch midfielder's current deal runs until next summer, but Barca's management is confident that a new agreement will soon be reached.

In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Deco stated: “We are in negotiations. Frenkie feels happy here. He has matured both in his family life and on the field. A player with character not only wants to stay at Barcelona because of the club's reputation but also because he wants to compete for titles. Frenkie sees this and wants to continue his commitment.”

According to Spanish media, De Jong is ready to sign a new contract until 2029 and is even willing to take a pay cut to remain at Camp Nou. This marks a significant turning point, as negotiations had previously stalled when he changed agents. President Joan Laporta also expressed optimism: “De Jong is the only exception in the renewal plan because he recently changed his agent. But Frenkie is highly motivated, and we expect good news soon.”

Since joining Barca from Ajax in 2019, Frenkie de Jong has played 265 matches, scored 19 goals, and won 6 trophies, including 2 La Liga titles and 2 Copa del Rey trophies. With his ability to control the tempo and orchestrate play, he is always regarded as an indispensable pillar in Hansi Flick’s squad.

Consistent performance and professional attitude have earned De Jong full trust from the management. Deco emphasized: “We consider Frenkie a key figure in the club’s current and future projects. I am confident he will stay.”
