Jose Mourinho returned to Stamford Bridge with disappointment as Chelsea narrowly defeated his new club, Benfica, in the Champions League.
Early today (October 1), Chelsea hosted Portuguese club Benfica at Stamford Bridge in a Champions League fixture. Jose Mourinho made his return to Stamford Bridge as Benfica’s manager.
Chelsea fans’ affection for Mourinho remained strong, as they sang loudly to welcome him before and during the match. In the 8th minute, Benfica launched an attack that threatened Chelsea’s goal, forcing goalkeeper Robert Sánchez to make a brilliant save on Dodi Lukébakio’s shot that struck the post.
Mourinho, who replaced former Wolves coach Bruno Lage just 12 days ago, probably did not anticipate Benfica "gifted" the opponent when Colombian midfielder Rios scored an own goal in the 18th minute.
The incident of Rios scoring an own goal.
After Pedro Neto’s cross into the penalty area, Alejandro Garnacho delivered a low cross. As Rios retreated, he accidentally made a poor clearance that caused Benfica’s net to shake.
