Jose Mourinho was compelled to intervene after an episode occurred in the spectator area during the Chelsea vs. Benfica game.
In the early hours of October 1, The 2025/26 Champions League continued with the second round out of a total of eight matches.
At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Benfica thanks to an own goal by Richard Ríos in the 18th minute. However, the main focus before kickoff was on Jose Mourinho, the former Chelsea manager newly appointed as Benfica's head coach following Bruno Lage’s dismissal.
As expected, Mourinho received a warm welcome from the home fans. According to journalist Ben Jacobs, just two minutes after the match started, Chelsea supporters collectively chanted Mourinho’s name, to which he responded by blowing kisses towards the stands. Jacobs wrote: “Only two minutes in, Mourinho’s name was chanted loudly. He replied with kisses.”
However, tension arose when some Benfica fans threw objects at Enzo Fernandez (a former player of theirs and now a Chelsea star). The “Special One” immediately approached the away supporters’ section, raising his hand to calm the situation while Enzo Fernandez was preparing to take a corner kick.
After the match, Jose Mourinho remained composed about the defeat: "The unfortunate part is not losing to Chelsea today, but the slip-up against Qarabağ. Even if we lost at Stamford Bridge, we should have secured at least 3 points earlier. Now the whole team must work hard to earn points in the remaining matches. I believe today’s performance deserved Benfica to leave London with at least a draw, but that wasn’t the case. We are still building confidence, fought hard, but it wasn’t enough to get the result. Still, overall, the feeling is positive.”
In domestic competition, Benfica currently ranks third in the Portuguese Primeira Liga with 17 points, one point behind Sporting CP and four points behind leaders FC Porto.
