The leadership at Manchester United reportedly reached a conclusion about Ruben Amorim's coaching future.
According to the Daily Mail, Coach Ruben Amorim continues to have the backing of Sir Jim Ratcliffe despite rumors that Manchester United is searching for a replacement. Sources confirm the club has not compiled a list of candidates, as doing so would undermine Amorim's credibility, similar to how Erik ten Hag lost his standing after the management approached other coaches before and after the 2024 FA Cup final.
After only 33 Premier League matches in charge, the Portuguese coach has suffered 17 defeats, exceeding the 14 losses he endured during 167 games managing Sporting Lisbon in the Portuguese top division. This statistic partly reflects a significant decline in Amorim's coaching effectiveness, especially given he is leading one of England’s most historic clubs.
Moreover, another metric shows he has yet to fully adapt to the harsh environment of English football, despite nearly a year in the role. To date, the 40-year-old strategist has not achieved back-to-back wins in the Premier League, a record far worse than many of his predecessors on the "Red Devils" bench.
Ruben Amorim was appointed as Manchester United’s head coach in November 2024, replacing Ten Hag after the Dutchman was dismissed. Previously, he made a strong impression at Sporting Lisbon, leading many to believe he could restore the club to its former glory. However, reality has been harsh. Amorim has yet to implement his football philosophy effectively, while the results continue to disappoint.
The 1-3 loss to Brentford last weekend once again cast doubts on the 1985-born coach’s future. After the match, he admitted: “We played exactly the way the opponent wanted. They disrupted us with one-touch and two-touch plays. If we follow that style, we will face many difficulties.”
As a result, several names have been mentioned as potential replacements, including Gareth Southgate, Oliver Glasner, and even Xavi.
Commenting on the current situation, former Liverpool and England star Jamie Carragher did not hesitate to call it a “disaster”: “This is a disaster not only for Manchester United but also for Ruben Amorim. What he achieved at Sporting Lisbon was truly remarkable. He was once seen as a promising young coach. But the system he pursues has never aligned with Manchester United’s traditions.”
This weekend, Manchester United will return to Premier League action, hosting Sunderland, the league’s newly promoted team, at Old Trafford.
