Van Lam returns to Vietnam National Team: Reclaims the No.1 position

After almost a year of absence, Van Lam is anticipated to provide solidity to Coach Kim Sang Sik’s defensive unit.

Coach Kim Sang Sik announced a 24-player Vietnam national team squad for the October FIFA Days, preparing for two matches against Nepal in the third qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup. The highlight is the return of goalkeeper Dang Van Lam after almost a year away, alongside eight U23 players getting their first chance to test themselves at the national team level.

According to the schedule, Vietnam will face Nepal on October 9 at Go Dau Stadium (Binh Duong) and again on October 14 at Thong Nhat Stadium (Ho Chi Minh City). These two matches are crucial in the quest to qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup, as well as an opportunity for the coaching staff to experiment with personnel and assess how the next generation adapts when playing alongside senior teammates.

Dang Van Lam’s comeback to the Vietnam National Team has been long awaited. Previously, he was named in the AFF Cup 2024 squad but had to withdraw at the last moment due to injury. While playing in the First Division, Van Lam was not called up. Only after returning to the V-League in the 2025/2026 season, maintaining consistent form and securing the number one spot in Ninh Binh’s goal, did the 1993-born goalkeeper convince Coach Kim Sang Sik to bring him back.

During nearly a year away from the national team, Van Lam maintained steady performance. Standing 1.87 meters tall, with quick reflexes and leadership in defense, he remains a solid last line of defense. A major strength of Van Lam is his communication and ability to organize the backline, fostering team cohesion—something Filip Nguyen, despite his skills, still lacks.

Dang Van Lam’s return carries both professional and morale significance. In a defense that is being rejuvenated, his presence is a vital experienced anchor. Additionally, the 32-year-old goalkeeper boosts confidence for young players making their international debut. In this transitional phase between old and new generations, a “quiet leader” like Van Lam helps maintain team balance.

In this training camp, Van Lam is almost certain to be the first-choice goalkeeper over two young keepers, Tran Trung Kien and Nguyen Van Viet. Both lack international experience and are mainly called up to gain exposure. In contrast, Van Lam has proven his consistency in many important matches, becoming a reliable pillar in defense.
