Arsenal won 2-0 against Olympiacos in the Champions League, yet Gabriel Magalhaes’ injury cast a shadow over the celebrations at the Emirates.
Arsenal claimed a 2-0 win over Olympiacos at the Emirates in the Champions League, but their happiness was marred when key defender Gabriel Magalhaes suffered an injury and had to leave the pitch early.
The Brazilian defender was hurt after a heavy collision with goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis. Although he tried to continue playing, Gabriel showed discomfort and required medical attention. Coach Mikel Arteta decided not to take risks and substituted him with Cristhian Mosquera.
After the match, Arteta explained: “He was kicked in the first half and felt some discomfort. Gabriel could have kept playing, but we didn’t want to take any chances.”
Earlier, Arsenal started the game assertively. After several threatening moves, Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring in the 35th minute, finishing a beautiful combination with Viktor Gyökeres. The match became more intense as Olympiacos pushed hard in the second half. The visitors once put the ball in Arsenal’s net following a shot by Chiquinho, but the goal was disallowed due to Ayoub El Kaabi being offside in the preceding play.
Arteta rotated his squad by bringing Bukayo Saka on in the second half, a decision that quickly paid off. In the 90+2 minute, Saka capitalized on a defensive error by the opponents and calmly fired a low shot between goalkeeper Tzolakis’s legs, sealing a 2-0 victory for the Gunners.
Gabriel Martinelli, the scorer of the opening goal, expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance: “This is the Champions League, where the competition is very tough. We could have scored more in the first half, but the important thing is that the team controlled the game well.”
The Brazilian forward also emphasized the squad’s depth: “We have excellent players. Arsenal’s goal is to win every trophy and every match this season.”
This victory helps Arsenal maintain their impressive form in the Champions League and demonstrates their squad depth, with many substitutes stepping up effectively. However, concerns about Gabriel Magalhaes’s fitness will surely make Arteta and the coaching staff consider their options carefully during the challenging period ahead in the season.
