English media report that Brighton’s Carlos Baleba is still Manchester United’s preferred candidate to revamp their midfield next year, unaffected by the uncertainty surrounding current coach Rúben Amorim’s position. Yet, the club remains doubtful about the transfer fee surpassing £100 million.

Fraser Fletcher of "TEAMtalk" states that inside Old Trafford, there is considerable worry about Amorim’s future. Sources reveal the coach appears exhausted and is aware that his management style is not effective. Therefore, Amorim’s dismissal is not just speculation.
However, who the head coach is does not affect Manchester United’s plan to sign Baleba. This summer, the club proactively contacted Brighton, knowing the latter would refuse to negotiate this potential transfer. Still, United believe such efforts are necessary. They want the player to understand that United are serious about acquiring him and to signal to Brighton that future bids remain possible.
Brighton values Baleba at a minimum of £100 million and expects this valuation to hold during next year's transfer window, especially since multiple clubs have shown interest in him. Among the rumors is the Premier League defending champion Liverpool.
Manchester United are very eager to recruit the 21-year-old Cameroonian midfielder, but they also have several other promising midfield targets on their list.
Players like Crystal Palace’s Adam Walton, Nottingham Forest’s Elliott Anderson, Atlético Madrid’s Gallagher, and Brentford’s Yohann Aarmoilyuk are also included in Manchester United’s scouting shortlist.

Manchester United plans to bring in two midfielders in 2026, one joining in January and another arriving next summer. Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos management team aims to sign Premier League players to ensure the newcomers adapt smoothly to their rebuilding roles in the squad.
Amorim believes Baleba fits well into his 3-4-3 tactical setup, but Manchester United think that even if the manager changes, Baleba will still be useful. Moreover, Ratcliffe and other club executives are willing to continue investing in the team.
However, a key issue is that Manchester United currently consider Baleba not worth £100 million, especially given his early-season performance decline. Therefore, the club needs to make sure the deal is financially viable.
Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Manchester United are closely monitoring Baleba’s situation, as both management and scouts highly appreciate him. If Amorim is dismissed, it will impact recruitment to some extent but won’t stop the club from pursuing Baleba unless the new coach explicitly opposes his signing.
Brighton holds the advantage as Baleba’s contract runs until 2028, with an additional one-year extension option. Even though Baleba’s performance this season has been average, the "Seagulls" won’t lower their price easily. Manchester United are well aware that once negotiations begin, they will be very challenging.

Rumors suggest Manchester United plan to offload four players to help fund Baleba’s transfer, including Casemiro, Sancho, Tyrell Malacia, and Tom Heaton, whose combined annual wages total £35 million.
