Coach Pep Guardiola expressed his views on the last-minute penalty that led to Man City losing the win against Monaco in the Champions League.
Man City dropped two points in their second group stage match of the Champions League when they were held to a 2-2 draw by AS Monaco in the closing moments of the game.
During the post-match press conference, Pep Guardiola was asked about the penalty awarded against Man City in the 90th minute. In response to the questions, the Spanish manager calmly stated: "No. I have nothing to say to the Spanish referees at all."
Replays showed that Nico Gonzalez touched the ball first, but due to a simultaneous collision with Dier, both he and Man City were at a disadvantage when VAR prompted referee Jesus Gil Manzano to review the incident on the sideline monitor. After the review, the referee pointed to the penalty spot and awarded the penalty to the home side.
However, what disappointed Pep Guardiola the most was his players’ failure to finish the match despite taking the lead twice thanks to Erling Haaland’s brace in his 50th Champions League appearance.
Phil Foden hit the crossbar in the first half, and Tijjani Reijnders also struck the woodwork in the second half, but the decisive third goal never came.
Pep expressed his frustration: "In football, the result is what matters. Looking at the entire match, there are many positive aspects. We will improve step by step, but today we created countless chances. Phil played very well in the first half along with many other players.
We barely gave the opponent any opportunities. We generated many dangerous attacks while they defended very deep and tight, which is not typical of their style. However, we adapted and played well. When the game got tense, it was important to know how to defend, and we managed to secure a point."
With this result, Man City currently sits in 8th place on the table with four points, while Monaco is in 30th place with only one point.
