Erling Haaland once again netted two goals but candidly condemned Man City's display following the 2-2 draw with Monaco in the Champions League.
Erling Haaland voiced his criticism of Manchester City's performance after his team was held to a 2-2 draw by Monaco in a thrilling Champions League group stage match.
After the match, Haaland did not hide his frustration with Man City's style of play: “Of course, I am not satisfied. We didn’t win and made unnecessary mistakes. In the second half, we didn’t play well enough, so we didn’t deserve the victory.”
When asked what was missing in City's gameplay, Haaland gave a brief answer: “We need more energy, stronger pressing like in the first half. Just holding possession is not enough.”
Regarding the controversial penalty incident, the Norwegian striker was straightforward: “I haven’t reviewed it yet, but if the ball hits someone's face, then it’s a penalty.”
When a reporter mentioned that he touched the ball only seven times in the first half but scored twice, Haaland replied: “I still contribute by moving and creating space for teammates. Participation isn’t just measured by touches. My job is to score and create chances, and I did that in the first half. In the second half, I didn’t manage.”
The match at Stade Louis II saw Haaland continue his incredible scoring form by netting a brace in the first half, bringing his total to 52 goals in 50 appearances in this prestigious competition. However, it wasn’t enough for Man City to secure all three points as Eric Dier equalized for Monaco in the 90th minute from the penalty spot.
Pep Guardiola’s team started slowly in the first 15 minutes, but right after Josko Gvardiol delivered a precise long pass, Haaland broke free and calmly finished to open the scoring. Man City’s joy lasted only three minutes before Jordan Teze fired a beautiful long-range shot to level the match.
Man City then dominated possession completely. At the 45th minute, Nico O’Reilly delivered an accurate cross for Haaland to head in close range, putting the visitors ahead 2-1.
In the second half, Man City kept pressing, but their lack of concentration in the final moments cost them. Eric Dier, a former Tottenham player, after being struck on the head by Nico Gonzalez inside the box, stepped up and converted the penalty himself, securing a point for Monaco.
