Arsenal is reportedly set to fire manager Mikel Arteta should they not secure the Premier League title this year.
According to legend Robert Pires, Arsenal’s board will not tolerate another trophyless season.
Mikel Arteta has managed Arsenal for nearly six years, yet during this period he has only won 1 FA Cup and 2 Community Shields. Notably, both trophies were claimed in 2020, meaning in the last five years, the Gunners have only added a minor cup under Arteta’s leadership.
In the Premier League, Arsenal have maintained consistent and convincing performances, but for three consecutive seasons they have settled for second place, unable to clinch the championship. This past summer, the London club invested heavily in the transfer market with transfers totaling 293 million Euros to bring in quality players such as Eberechi Eze, Viktor Gyökeres, Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Piero Hincapié, and Christian Norgaard.
Speaking to Foot Mercato, Pires (a member of the 2004 “Invincibles” generation) frankly stated: “My view is that if Arsenal do not win a trophy this season, the management will consider appointing a new coach. Arteta has been here for five years, and unfortunately, he hasn’t yet conquered the title. The most important thing for fans is the championship. The club has spent money and met his demands. If Arsenal fails to win, I believe there will definitely be a change on the bench.”
Nonetheless, Pires acknowledges that the path to the Premier League crown is challenging with strong rivals like Liverpool, Man City, and Chelsea. However, he believes Arsenal currently holds enough key players to aim for the title.
At present, Arsenal have started the new season positively. After a 2-1 victory at Newcastle last weekend, the Gunners are just 2 points behind league leaders Liverpool.
Coach Arteta: 'Arsenal have enough depth to conquer the Champions League' Manager Mikel Arteta affirmed that Arsenal now possess a squad with greater depth compared to last season and are ready to compete for the 2025/26 Champions League, following a 2-0 win against Olympiacos in the second group stage match.
