Man Utd was reportedly considering appointing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as head coach before choosing Ruben Amorim for the position.
According to The Sun, Man Utd’s management had contemplated bringing back the legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to lead the team if they failed to secure Ruben Amorim from Sporting Lisbon. Ultimately, Amorim was selected to replace Erik ten Hag after the Dutch coach was dismissed in October 2024.
However, Amorim’s tenure at Old Trafford has not met expectations. Last season, Man Utd finished 15th in the Premier League and lost to Tottenham in the Europa League final. This new season looks even bleaker, with the "Red Devils" being eliminated by Grimsby Town, a League Two club, in the second round of the Carabao Cup, and currently sitting 14th in the Premier League with only two wins from six matches.
Poor performance, despite heavy spending in the transfer market, has put Amorim’s future under significant pressure. Many experts suggest Man Utd should consider parting ways with the 40-year-old coach, while former England manager Gareth Southgate has been mentioned as a potential replacement.
In this context, Solskjaer’s name has come up again. The Norwegian coach recently left Besiktas after the Turkish club was knocked out in the Conference League playoff round in August. He was with Besiktas for only eight months, despite signing an 18-month contract in January 2025. This has fueled speculation that Solskjaer might return to Old Trafford, at least as a temporary rescue option.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer previously managed Man Utd from December 2018 to November 2021, starting as interim before signing a long-term deal. In 168 matches across all competitions, he recorded 91 wins, 37 draws, and 40 losses, with a win rate of about 54.2%.
Under Solskjaer’s leadership, Man Utd had two notable Premier League seasons: finishing 3rd in 2019/20 and as runners-up in 2020/21.
The Norwegian coach also led the "Red Devils" to the 2021 Europa League final, where they lost to Villarreal on penalties. Although he did not secure a major trophy, Solskjaer was praised for revitalizing Man Utd’s fighting spirit, especially in away games, improving attacking play, and fostering strong team cohesion.
