The upcoming position for Pep Guardiola following his departure from Man City is drawing significant interest. Several voices, among them ex-player David Silva, expect him to lead Spain's national squad.
After nearly a decade with Manchester City, coach Pep Guardiola remained in the spotlight when he signed a two-year contract extension last November, extending his stay at the Etihad until 2027. However, former “The Citizens” star David Silva believes his former coach has another special chapter ahead in his managerial career: coaching the Spanish national team.
Silva, who played for Man City from 2010 to 2020 and worked directly with Guardiola for four years, shared: “I want to see Pep become the coach of Spain in the future. Luis de la Fuente is doing very well, but it would be fantastic if one day Pep took over. He can bring a ball-possession philosophy and a winning mentality, very much aligned with La Roja’s identity.”
This statement comes as Spain just won the EURO 2024 title after defeating England 2-1 in the final. Coach De la Fuente has extended his contract until 2028, but Silva’s hopes reflect the high expectations among fans for a day when Guardiola leads his homeland’s team.
At the club level, Pep Guardiola faced many doubts when Man City struggled last season. Nevertheless, he signed a new contract and the management invested heavily to rebuild the squad with signings like Gianluigi Donnarumma, Rayan Cherki, and Nico Gonzalez. Still, City’s start to the 2025/26 season has been less convincing, winning only three of the first six Premier League matches.
For his part, Guardiola has hinted at a long-term commitment at Etihad: “I have two years left on my contract, maybe more if extended. I will only stop when I feel it’s time. For now, I still feel good.”
However, if one day Guardiola leaves Man City, the prospect of him taking the helm of Spain’s national team will surely excite La Roja’s supporters. With his experience, trophies, and football philosophy shaped at both Barcelona and Manchester City, Pep Guardiola is seen as an ideal choice to bring Spain back to the top of world football.
