Asian manager Ange Postecoglou has just entered Premier League history in an unfortunate way, becoming the first coach in 100 years to fail to win any of his first 6 matches with Nottingham Forest.
Ange Postecoglou is enduring a dreadful start at Nottingham Forest, making him the first manager in a century not to secure a single victory in his first 6 games in charge of the club.
Appointed on September 9th to replace Nuno Espirito Santo, the former Tottenham coach was expected to bring fresh energy. However, instead of improvement, Forest is sinking into crisis. The 2-3 defeat to Midtjylland in the Europa League at City Ground last week clearly demonstrated this, with the defense repeatedly making mistakes on set-piece situations.
In that match, Dan Ndoye managed to equalize for Forest after falling behind, but just two minutes later, the English side conceded again. Midtjylland then scored a third goal, turning Chris Wood’s late penalty into a mere consolation. In the stands, Forest fans expressed their frustration with boos and even chanted: “You’re getting sacked in the morning” (You will be fired tomorrow morning).
In reality, Postecoglou has yet to make a significant impact. He started with a 0-3 loss to Arsenal, then was knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Swansea despite leading by two goals. Two draws against Burnley and Real Betis offered little consolation. Worse still, Forest have conceded 13 goals in 6 games, failing to keep a clean sheet since April.
Under intense pressure from the public, the Australian manager remains calm: “I understand the fans’ disappointment. They have the right to express their opinions, and I must take responsibility for steering the team in the right direction. I believe we are on the necessary path and just need time to get through this difficult period.”
Nevertheless, history is working against Postecoglou. The last time Forest had a manager who failed to win any of his first 6 games was in 1925 with John Baynes. The possibility of an early dismissal is very real if results do not improve soon.
Coming up, Nottingham Forest will visit Newcastle in the Premier League this weekend. This match is seen as a “do or die” game for Postecoglou to save his increasingly shaky position.
