The 2025 World Youth Chess Championship officially took place in Albania from October 3 to 16.
The 2025 World Youth Chess Championship kicked off in Albania from October 3 to 16, featuring over 720 players from 80 countries and territories. The Vietnamese delegation includes four promising talents: Trần Ngọc Minh Duy, Nguyễn Bình Vy, Tống Thái Hoàng An, and Lê Thái Hoàng Anh, competing in the standard chess category with 11 rounds following the Swiss system.
This tournament carries high hopes for Vietnamese youth chess following encouraging results from the U8, U10, and U12 age groups. Just three days ago, the Vietnamese youth team secured a silver medal thanks to player Lê Phan Hoàng Quân in the U10 boys category. This achievement greatly motivates the older players in the U14, U16, and U18 groups currently competing in Albania.
In the past, Vietnamese youth chess faced many challenges at this event. Last year, the team sent six players but did not win any medals. The best result was Đinh Nho Kiệt finishing 4th in the U14 boys category. Therefore, winning a medal this year is seen as a crucial goal and a step forward in establishing Vietnam’s youth chess status on the international stage.
Preparation for the tournament in Albania was thorough, with the coaching staff selecting highly potential players who have international competition experience. Despite facing strong opponents from chess powerhouses like Russia, India, the USA, and China, the young Vietnamese players aim to advance deep into the competition, cause surprises, and achieve top results.
