The coach of Man Utd's U18 squad is viewed as a potential candidate to succeed Ruben Amorim in the senior team's managerial role.
According to The Sun, former midfielder Darren Fletcher is rising as a top contender on Man Utd's shortlist for the interim manager role, should Ruben Amorim be dismissed before the season ends. Fletcher was appointed to lead the U18s at the end of June but quickly impressed with his clear coaching style and positive results.
Previously, Fletcher served as an assistant coach at Man Utd during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's tenure. He joined the first team’s coaching staff at the start of 2021 alongside Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna to support Solskjaer in team development. The former midfielder then continued working with the "Red Devils" under Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag.
Regarding the current manager Ruben Amorim, many believe he needs more time and a full pre-season period to implement his football philosophy. However, despite over £200 million spent on strengthening the squad, Man Utd is still struggling in 14th place on the league table.
Since arriving at Old Trafford, Amorim has secured only 34 points from 33 Premier League matches. The Portuguese strategist has been criticized for being overly conservative and tactically inflexible. If dismissed before November, Man Utd would have to pay £12 million in contract compensation.
Several names have been mentioned as potential replacements. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is seen as a viable option, having stabilized the team after Jose Mourinho’s departure in the 2018/19 season. Michael Carrick was also considered for the interim role but now serves as UEFA’s Technical Observer. Oliver Glasner, who led Crystal Palace to two trophies in just five months, is regarded as a strong candidate alongside Gareth Southgate and Barcelona legend Xavi.
Man Utd’s upcoming challenge will be the home match against Sunderland, the surprise newcomers this season, in the Premier League’s seventh round. Failure to secure all three points against the "Black Cats" will increase the pressure on Amorim, forcing him to find ways to turn the situation around.
