Ruben Amorim fired back at the Manchester United legend following a wave of criticism aimed at him.
The future of coach Ruben Amorim at Manchester United has become a hot topic of debate after a string of poor results, with many "Red Devils" legends like Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville openly expressing doubts about the Portuguese manager. However, Ruben Amorim has defended his tactical philosophy and denied that his system is the main cause of the team's decline.
Facing pressure, Amorim stated that he understands and accepts the criticism but disagrees that the problem lies in the tactical system:
“That’s normal, because we cannot avoid results. But looking back at the losses, I don’t believe the cause is the system.
Against Man City or Brentford, the goals conceded came from how we defended and took chances, not from the three-defender formation,” he explained during the pre-match press conference.
Amorim also emphasized that blaming tactics is an oversimplification. According to him, the key lies in consistency and how players execute the style of play. “Some days we perform well, some days we don’t. What we need is to maintain the same approach, the same focus, repeatedly. The issue is not the system, but the lack of stability,” the 40-year-old coach said.
When asked if the players have truly grasped the philosophy after nearly a year in charge, Amorim admitted the performance against Brentford was “disjointed” but stressed that doesn’t prove the system has failed.“You can’t say something is ineffective just because it didn’t work on one day. We need to do the same thing, with more precision, in every match,” he asserted.
After a 1-3 defeat to Brentford, MU have lost 4 of 7 games in all competitions this season. The poor results have dropped the team to 14th in the Premier League and caused an early exit from the League Cup. Pressure is mounting, especially as many sources suggest Amorim could lose his job if he doesn’t win against newly promoted Sunderland this weekend.
MU legends have not hesitated to express their disappointment. Wayne Rooney bluntly said he “has lost faith” in Amorim. Former captain Gary Neville described the situation as “worrying,” while Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt both called on the Portuguese coach to abandon the three-center-back formation, which is seen as ineffective.
Despite opposition from long-standing MU legends, Amorim remains steadfast in his belief in his philosophy. The upcoming match against Sunderland will not only be crucial for points but could also determine his fate at Old Trafford.
