Following a disappointing spell at Bayer Leverkusen, manager Erik ten Hag is on the verge of an unexpected return to coaching.
According to sources from the Netherlands, the Dutch strategist is being considered by Ajax Amsterdam amid the club’s struggles in European competitions.
Expected to rebuild his career after departing Manchester United, Ten Hag was quickly dismissed by Leverkusen after just two Bundesliga matches. This brief period led the public to believe his reputation in coaching circles was fading. However, with an impressive track record at Ajax, Ten Hag still holds significant value to be leveraged.
Between 2017 and 2022, Ten Hag led Ajax to three Eredivisie titles and notably achieved a semi-final run in the 2018/19 Champions League, eliminating both Real Madrid and Juventus before being knocked out by Tottenham in a dramatic match featuring Lucas Moura’s hat-trick. This era established his name on the European football map.
At Manchester United, Ten Hag also left his mark by winning two domestic trophies: the English League Cup and the FA Cup, where the victory against Man City in the FA Cup final helped him retain his position temporarily. Nevertheless, consecutive failures in the Premier League and internal conflicts forced the Red Devils’ management to part ways with him.
According to the De Telegraaf, Ajax is considering bringing Ten Hag back to replace Johnny Heitinga following a heavy 0-4 defeat to Marseille in the Champions League. Despite remaining unbeaten in the Eredivisie and sitting third, Ajax’s leadership is concerned that the European situation might harm the club’s image, viewing Ten Hag as a long-term solution.
Returning to Ajax would provide Ten Hag with a familiar environment where he once had the authority to build the team. This is also a suitable destination for him to restore his reputation after recent setbacks. If the deal materializes, it will be one of the most notable reunions in European football this season.
