Coach Arne Slot acknowledged Liverpool’s difficult streak following their 1-2 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, adding that his side “failed to maintain concentration in the closing moments.”
After the 1-2 defeat to Chelsea, Slot entered the press conference looking disappointed. This marked Liverpool’s third consecutive loss within a week, following defeats to Crystal Palace in the Premier League and Galatasaray in the Champions League. His team continued to struggle despite equalizing through Cody Gakpo, only to concede a decisive goal by young player Estevão Willian in stoppage time.
Speaking about the match, Arne Slot said: “Both teams played very strongly. Their only chance in the first half was a shot to the top corner. We had three clear opportunities, and the equalizer at 1-1 was deserved. But in the last 15 minutes, the game became tightly contested, and ultimately we conceded.”
When asked why Liverpool often drops points late in games, the Dutch coach admitted: “The opponents we face are all very tough. We lost to Chelsea last season, and Stamford Bridge has never been an easy venue. The notable issue is that we keep conceding late goals – first Galatasaray, then Palace, and now Chelsea.”
Slot also explained the frequent changes in the defense: “I had to substitute the full-backs due to yellow cards. Conor Bradley committed two consecutive fouls, and Milos Kerkez was exhausted after playing three matches in a week, something he wasn’t used to from his time at Bournemouth. I didn’t want to take risks, so I decided to make changes.”
Regarding center-back Ibrahima Konate, he revealed: “He had a slight quad muscle strain. If the match had been slower-paced, I might have kept him on a bit longer, but I didn’t want to risk it.”
The Dutch coach was also frank about finishing: “We had chances to seal the game, especially after equalizing. But at this level, a few moments of inaccuracy can cost you. We need to be more composed and capitalize better on our opportunities.”
When asked about solutions, Slot sighed: “It’s tough with players soon returning to their national teams. I want them to stay and work together on adjustments and stabilizing our play. However, the positive thing is that none of our losses were easy. The players fought until the last second, and I believe we will bounce back.”
The defeat to Chelsea dropped Liverpool to second place in the standings, handing the top spot to Arsenal. Nevertheless, Arne Slot remains optimistic, affirming that his team “will not collapse because of a few unlucky results, but will come back stronger after the international break.”
