Harry Maguire is expected to depart from Manchester United in the upcoming summer.
The future of central defender Harry Maguire at Manchester United has become a focal point after multiple British media outlets reported that he is likely to leave Old Trafford to join the Saudi Pro League this summer.
Maguire’s current contract with MU runs until June 2026, after the “Red Devils” activated a one-year extension clause last summer. However, according to various sources, the club’s management has no intention to offer a long-term deal, opening the possibility for the English defender to seek a new club.
Both Al-Nassr and Al-Ettifaq, two financially strong clubs in Saudi Arabia, are reportedly closely monitoring this situation. As Maguire will turn 33 in March 2026, this could be his last chance to sign a lucrative contract before his career enters its final phase.
Joining Al-Nassr would be an appealing prospect for Maguire, as he would reunite with his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo. Additionally, the massive financial incentives offered by the Saudi Pro League are undoubtedly hard to ignore.
In a statement last August, Maguire admitted that his contract situation was no longer entirely under his control: “Last year, the extension clause was in the club’s hands, so I had no choice. They simply activated it, and the contract was extended. This year is different; my contract ends at the season’s conclusion, and everything needs to be discussed.”
Although affirming his love for Manchester United, Maguire also left the door open for a possible departure: “MU is a fantastic club, and it would be foolish to leave too soon. But of course, I have my own plans and will consider them at the right time.”
Since joining MU for a record £80 million from Leicester City in 2019, Maguire has always been a controversial figure. Despite having served as captain and earning 64 caps for England, his performance in recent seasons has often been questioned. Currently, he is also absent from the latest squad call-up by coach Thomas Tuchel, making his chances of participating in the 2026 World Cup with the “Three Lions” uncertain.
For MU, the decision not to extend Maguire’s contract for several more years is seen as a move to pave the way for defensive rejuvenation. The “Red Devils” aim to focus on young talents aligned with coach Ruben Amorim’s long-term vision.
In this context, the Saudi Pro League emerges as a sensible option for Maguire: it guarantees financial security while opening a new chapter for a career that has stalled over recent years.
