New signing Senne Lammens has been likened to Peter Schmeichel by fans after an impressive debut that helped MU secure a 2-0 victory over Sunderland.
Manchester United has somewhat regained confidence in the goalkeeper position after a period of instability. Senne Lammens, signed from Antwerp for £18.2 million, made a remarkable debut in the 2-0 win against Sunderland at Old Trafford, easing pressure on coach Ruben Amorim’s team following a 1-3 loss to Brentford.
Lammens’ arrival sparked a strong reaction in the stands. MU supporters chanted “Are you Peter Schmeichel in disguise?” expressing hope for the legendary keeper’s spirit. Beyond fan affection, the 23-year-old proved his worth with a solid performance throughout the full 90 minutes.
In the first half, MU quickly took a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko, allowing Lammens a relatively calm start. However, when called upon, he displayed excellent reflexes by blocking a dangerous shot from Granit Xhaka.
His proactive decision to rush out and catch crosses also won the fans’ hearts, who had grown impatient with Bayindir and Onana. Notably, this was MU’s first clean sheet of the season after conceding 13 goals in just 6 previous matches.
Not only steady in goal, Lammens impressed with his footwork and calmness when distributing the ball. He frequently commanded the defense, providing a sense of security to his teammates.
After the match, coach Ruben Amorim praised him extensively: “He looked very confident, but importantly, his teammates supported him to have a good game. He needs more time to adapt, but this is a positive start.”
Lammens ended his memorable day with congratulatory hugs from De Ligt, Maguire, and Luke Shaw. This performance could secure his starting spot when MU faces Liverpool after the international break.
Although it’s too early to say Lammens is the final solution to MU’s goalkeeper issue, his debut against Sunderland has restored the long-awaited faith at Old Trafford.
