Amorim matches Sir Alex's record after 38 years

Coach Ruben Amorim has reached an impressive milestone similar to what his predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson achieved at Man Utd.

Ruben Amorim and his Man Utd squad delivered their best performance so far this season with a comfortable victory over Sunderland in the 7th round of the Premier League.

Before the match, Amorim faced heavy pressure due to a poor run of results early in the season, and the Portuguese manager was rumored to be at risk of dismissal if he lost to the "Black Cats." However, he not only overcame the challenge easily but also equaled a remarkable record held by the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.

Specifically, Amorim broke a 38-year-long streak at Man Utd by becoming the next coach to secure a win in his 50th game in charge of the "Red Devils". Sir Alex Ferguson was the last to achieve this when he led Man Utd to victory over Bury in November 1987.

Notably, this achievement had never been reached by any of Sir Alex’s successors before. Less than a year after succeeding Ferguson, David Moyes reached his 50th game as head coach at Allianz Arena, where Man Utd lost 1-3 to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

The next successor was Louis van Gaal, but his 50th match, an away game against Swansea City, also ended in defeat.

Then Jose Mourinho took over in May 2016. He led Man Utd to win the Europa League and League Cup in his first season. However, like his two predecessors, the "Special One" could not win his 50th game in charge, though the result was a better 1-1 draw against Everton.

Next came Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who had an impressive start at Old Trafford, but his 50th match ended in a 2-2 draw against Aston Villa.

Finally, Erik ten Hag also drew 2-2 in his 50th game, when Man Utd faced Sevilla in the Europa League quarter-finals in April 2023.

For Amorim, this is only his third Premier League win this season, after the team suffered 3 defeats and 1 draw. Remarkably, nine out of the ten points earned so far were gained at home in Old Trafford, highlighting the strong performance at the "Theatre of Dreams."

With this victory, the pressure on Amorim has lessened, and Man Utd also improved their position significantly in the standings, climbing to 9th place, just two points behind the European competition spots.
