Lewandowski missed a penalty, Barca suffered a heavy defeat, losing the top spot in La Liga

Despite being unbeaten, Barca left empty-handed after a 1-4 thrashing away at Sevilla in La Liga round 8.

Barca suffered a heavy defeat to Sevilla and failed to regain the top spot in La Liga.

Sevilla began with great enthusiasm at Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán stadium. Just minutes after kickoff, the home team kept pressing hard, leaving Barca’s defense unsettled.

In the 13th minute, a decisive moment arrived when referee Alejandro Muniz checked VAR and confirmed Ronald Araujo committed a foul on Isaac Romero inside the penalty area.

From the penalty spot, Alexis Sanchez – a former Barca forward – calmly scored past Szczesny to give Sevilla a 1-0 lead and celebrated emotionally after scoring against his old club.

Before Barca could recover control, they paid the price again. In the 37th minute, Jules Kounde lost possession dangerously in midfield, Sevilla countered quickly, and Ruben Vargas delivered a perfect cross for Isaac Romero to easily tap in and double the lead to 2-0.

Earlier, Romero had squandered several good chances by shooting wide and was denied by Szczesny from a favorable position.

It seemed the first half would end safely for Sevilla, but Barca suddenly pushed forward. In the 45+7 minute, Pedri sent a precise cross for Marcus Rashford to volley beautifully, cutting the score to 1-2 and rekindling hope for the visitors before halftime.

In the second half, Barca pressed high and created some opportunities. In the 65th minute, Sevilla’s goalkeeper Vlachodimos made excellent saves to block two dangerous shots, preserving the home side’s lead.

The biggest chance came in the 74th minute when Balde was fouled by Adnan Januzaj inside the box. From the penalty spot, Robert Lewandowski had a chance to equalize at 2-2, but his shot went wide, missing a golden opportunity for Barca.

After that, Barca gradually fell apart. In the 90th minute, Sevilla dealt the final blow when Jose Angel Carmona sprinted from his own half and scored with a diagonal shot past Szczesny, making it 3-1.

In the 90+7 minute, Chidera Ejuke assisted Akor Adams, who easily scored from close range to seal a dominant 4-1 win for Sevilla.

This heavy loss demonstrated that Barca not only lacked resilience at key moments but also wasted too many chances. Meanwhile, Sevilla took full advantage of the opponent’s mistakes and lapses to earn a convincing victory.
