Barcelona remains engulfed in turmoil following a crushing 1-4 defeat against Sevilla in La Liga, and midfielder Pedri openly identified the key problems behind the team's downfall.
Immediately after the final whistle, Pedri, representing Barcelona, spoke to Movistar and admitted the team underperformed from the start. Pedri stated: “We need to reflect on ourselves. In the first half, we didn't know how to attack or defend. In the second half, the whole team had to improve to have any chance of coming back to win.”
According to the Spanish midfielder, the issue was not isolated but a comprehensive decline: “We lacked intensity and quality when holding the ball, and there were too many things to fix. Even after adjustments at halftime, we never truly played like ourselves at any point in the second half.”
When asked what caused such a weak defeat for Barca, Pedri did not hesitate to pinpoint the crucial factor: the lack of intensity. He added: “It was a lack of determination. They beat us in every duel. At times, we pushed up unnecessarily. Sevilla pressed constantly, and we didn’t know how to handle it.”
These admissions perfectly matched what was seen on the pitch, as Barcelona was outpaced, physically outmatched, and lost control of the game—something that has been their hallmark for many years.
The defeat to Sevilla came only days after a shock loss in the Champions League, where Barca fell to PSG despite the French side missing several key players. Two consecutive losses against struggling opponents have intensified the tense atmosphere at Camp Nou.
Pressure is mounting on coach Hansi Flick, who was expected to revive Barca after instability during Xavi’s tenure. However, his tactical impact remains unclear, while the team continues to expose weaknesses in defense, pressing, and attacking organization.
Amid Barca’s loss of direction and declining morale, Pedri believes the international break offers a chance for rebuilding. It is also an opportunity for Flick to reassess the squad, restore key players’ fitness, and adjust tactics before La Liga resumes. Nonetheless, the pressure remains: the post-break schedule will be tough, with multiple matches against top teams and a fierce Champions League campaign.
