Robert Lewandowski faced heavy backlash from Barcelona fans following his missed penalty in the 1-4 defeat to Sevilla, which dashed the club’s hopes of leading La Liga.
Barcelona traveled to Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan stadium aiming to secure all three points to move to the top of the table. However, Hansi Flick’s squad endured a nightmare evening. Former Barca player Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring for Sevilla from the penalty spot, followed by Isaac Romero doubling the lead. Although Marcus Rashford managed to pull one back before halftime, the visitors’ hopes quickly faded in the second half.
In the 76th minute, Barca was awarded a penalty after Alejandro Balde was fouled inside the box. Lewandowski — who had scored on all three of his previous penalties — was tasked with taking the kick. However, his Jorginho-style “hop” backfired: the ball missed the target, leaving the away fans stunned and drawing loud jeers from the stands.
This missed opportunity was seen as the turning point that led to Barcelona’s complete collapse. Jose Angel Carmona and Akor Adams each scored late goals for Sevilla, sealing a heavy 4-1 victory for the hosts. With this result, Barca not only missed the chance to take the lead but also suffered their second defeat in four days, following a 1-2 loss to PSG in the Champions League.
On social media, Blaugrana fans expressed their deep disappointment. One wrote: “Starting him after such a poor performance is criminal.” Another sarcastically commented: “Lewandowski’s penalty technique is the worst I’ve ever seen.” Some fans were even harsher: “A squad with real depth wouldn’t let Lewandowski play anymore.”
Many believe the 37-year-old striker’s performance is noticeably declining. Throughout the match, Lewandowski failed to register a single shot on target and frequently lost battles for the ball. Despite netting 4 goals this season, his pace and agility are in question, as age seems to be diminishing his usual sharpness.
Barca will have a short break before returning after the international break to face Girona in the first match at Camp Nou following renovations. But before looking ahead, Hansi Flick and his team must confront a wave of harsh criticism, especially directed at Lewandowski — who effectively “cut his own luck” at Sanchez-Pizjuan with that decisive missed shot.
