Arteta is concerned about the condition of Arsenal’s key players

Coach Mikel Arteta openly expressed concern when two vital Arsenal players, Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard, got injured in the 2-0 win against West Ham in Premier League round 7.

Arsenal secured a 2-0 win against West Ham in the London derby at the Emirates Stadium, moving up to the top of the Premier League table. However, the joy for coach Mikel Arteta was tempered as key players Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard both sustained injuries and had to leave the pitch early.

The match was dominated by Arsenal from start to finish. In the 38th minute, Declan Rice opened the scoring against his former club by capitalizing on a rebound from goalkeeper Areola with a precise follow-up shot. This goal allowed the “Gunners” to control the game easily, maintaining nearly double the possession compared to West Ham.

In the second half, Arsenal kept up the pressure. In the 68th minute, Bukayo Saka was fouled inside the penalty area and successfully converted the resulting penalty, sealing the 2-0 victory. Notably, this marked Saka’s 100th goal involvement in the Premier League, achieved in just 200 appearances — an impressive milestone for the young English talent.

However, in the 79th minute, Declan Rice unexpectedly signaled for a substitution. After the match, coach Arteta commented: “He wasn’t feeling well because he himself asked to be substituted. Rice experienced back pain and couldn’t continue playing, which is very unusual for him. We will have to wait for the medical examination results to determine the exact severity of the injury.”

Not only Rice, but captain Martin Odegaard also encountered issues after a knee collision in the first half. “Odegaard said he wasn’t feeling right and currently has his knee immobilized. We will wait for the medical team’s assessment, hoping the injury is not too serious,” Arteta added further.

Despite the squad difficulties, Arsenal delivered a convincing performance in Mikel Arteta’s 300th match as head coach. With proactive play, strong ball control, and an effective attack, the “Gunners” demonstrated they have the resilience to keep competing for the title this season.

However, the injuries to Rice and Odegaard are worrying fans, as both are the core of Arsenal’s playing style. Arteta will need timely alternatives to maintain the team’s form ahead of the demanding schedule coming up.
