Malaysia is anxiously awaiting the final decision from FIFA.

Tension is mounting as today marks the last day within the 10-day period FIFA granted FAM to submit an appeal against the severe sanctions related to the illegal naturalization of seven players. The entire Southeast Asian region is watching closely, because missing this deadline would almost close the door on reversing the situation.

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has confirmed that they are still waiting for FIFA’s detailed ruling to complete their documentation. Acting president Datuk Yusoff Mahadi stated: "Once we receive the detailed verdict, we will prepare our arguments for the appeal based on the information provided by FIFA. If the appeal fails, we will consider another option, which is the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)."

Under time pressure, FAM is reportedly considering hiring an international sports lawyer to ensure the appeal process proceeds without errors. According to Arena Metro, only highly experienced lawyers can handle the complex legal procedures in international football and protect Malaysia’s interests.

The pressure on FAM in recent days has been immense. Not only do they face the risk of FIFA upholding the punishment, but Malaysia is also under intense scrutiny from both domestic and international public opinion. Many fans view this as a test of FAM’s football management capabilities and worry that the 12-month suspension could set Malaysian football back by many years.

As the deadline approaches, the pressure intensifies. The Facebook page Asean Football also highlighted that Malaysia is entering the last day to appeal, attracting thousands of interactions and comments. Many fans are skeptical about the chances of success, but some believe FAM might be able to reduce the severity of the penalty.

Regional media are also closely following Malaysia’s punishment.

The issue began during the Malaysia vs. Vietnam match in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers on June 10, when seven naturalized players—Joao Figueiredo, Jon Irazabal, Hector Hevel, Gabriel Palmero, Facundo Garces, Rodrigo Holgado, and Imanol Machuca—took the field. FIFA concluded that FAM used forged documents to legitimize their eligibility, resulting in a 12-month ban for all seven players and a severe penalty for FAM.

Meanwhile, four players—Holgado, Palmero, Garces, and Machuca—have returned to Malaysia seeking solutions for their futures. Fans spotted them in Johor Baru, while their clubs suspended them immediately after the sanctions. Velez Sarsfield coach Barros Schelotto said: "We were all shocked, including Machuca. He and FAM still have a few days to appeal. Hopefully, Machuca will return soon."

Now, as the deadline has arrived, Malaysian football has only one last chance to save itself. Can FAM turn the situation around at the last moment, or must they accept what is considered the harshest penalty in their history?
