Laos summons young Vietnamese-origin player and Thai League star to face Malaysia

In the list of 23 players announced by coach Ha Hyeok Jun for the 3rd round of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, the Laos team drew major attention by naming a Vietnamese-origin player currently with Thanh Hóa Club – Damoth Thongkhamsavath.

Preparing for two key matches against Malaysia in Group F of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, coach Ha Hyeok Jun continues a full-scale reform of the national team. This coach not only emphasizes fitness and tactical discipline but also actively searches for players competing abroad to elevate the team’s quality.

Besides the core players from domestic clubs such as EZRA FC and Mazda GB FC, coach Ha has called up three players playing overseas. Among them is a name that surprised Vietnamese fans: Damoth Thongkhamsavath, a player registered with Thanh Hóa Club.

Damoth Thongkhamsavath has been called up to the Laos national team

Damoth was born on April 3, 2004, in Laos, and he comes from a family with Vietnamese roots. His paternal grandparents are from Quảng Bình and relocated to Laos many years ago. Although raised in Laos, the young player understands and speaks Vietnamese because his parents frequently use it in daily life. In Vietnam, Damoth joined Thanh Hóa Club in 2023, but his playing time remains limited.

Besides Damoth, two other notable players competing in stronger football leagues are Phouthavong Sangvilay (BG Pathum United – Thailand) and Bounphachan Bounkong (Svay Rieng – Cambodia). Along with experienced pillars like Bounphachan and Sangvilay, Damoth’s presence not only gives Laos more midfield options but also symbolizes the bond between Laos and the Vietnamese community.
