AFC Secretary General Datuk Seri Windsor Paul disclosed the possibility of a harsh punishment for Malaysia should FAM’s appeal be unsuccessful.
After weeks of investigation, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is nearing the official announcement regarding the scandal involving Malaysia’s player naturalization. This is considered the most serious case in Southeast Asia recently, with multiple sources indicating that the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) did not fully comply with FIFA’s regulations on player naturalization and registration.
According to AFC Secretary General Datuk Seri Windsor Paul, Malaysia’s case is being thoroughly examined, especially the documents verifying nationality and residency periods of certain players. Upon completing the review, the AFC will forward the report to the Disciplinary Committee for a final decision. Mr. Windsor Paul stated that this entire process could take at least two months, as the continental football authority must ensure absolute objectivity and fairness at every stage.
The AFC Secretary General further emphasized: “Since the Malaysian national team and Johor Darul Ta'zim club are participating in two AFC-organized tournaments, if FAM is found guilty of violations, they will certainly face the risk of point deductions. Moreover, in cases of serious breaches, Malaysian football might face even harsher penalties on the international stage.”
After FIFA issues its ruling, FAM has 10 days to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The final decision from FIFA or CAS will then be sent to the AFC for the Disciplinary Committee’s review. If FAM is confirmed to have violated regulations, the AFC may impose penalties such as point deductions, fines, or bans from continental competitions.
This information has stirred strong reactions in Malaysia. Many fans are worried as the national team is preparing for the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, and Johor Darul Ta'zim is a source of pride for Malaysian football in the AFC Champions League Two. If sanctions are applied, both representatives could suffer significant impacts on their performance, reputation, and finances.
Meanwhile, FAM remains cautious, has not issued an official response, but affirms full cooperation with the AFC. Insider sources reveal that FAM has hired an international legal team to review all naturalized player documents and prepare defense materials in case explanations are required.
