Gerardo Martino, the former Inter Miami coach, is said to be on the verge of coming back to MLS to manage a leading club.
Inter Miami has quickly established itself as one of the most formidable teams in MLS. Having reached the playoffs in the last two seasons consecutively, the club has demonstrated solid progress both technically and in competitive spirit. Now, in an intriguing development, a former coach of Lionel Messi is set to face the “Herons” in the upcoming season.
According to reports from journalists German Garcia and Agustin Malvestitti of TyC Sports, Gerardo Martino has reached a verbal agreement to become the head coach of Los Angeles FC for the upcoming MLS season. However, journalist Tom Bogert notes that the club has yet to make a final decision as they continue to consider other candidates. Therefore, Martino’s return to MLS remains uncertain.
Joining Inter Miami in July 2023, Gerardo Martino quickly left a strong mark during his 496 days in charge. Under his leadership, Inter Miami won their first-ever trophies, including the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield, boasting an impressive 52.24% win rate—the best record for the club until Javier Mascherano took over.
In November 2024, Martino unexpectedly announced his departure from Inter Miami despite a highly successful period. When asked about this decision, he explained: "For personal reasons, I had to leave Miami. I need to return to Rosario. We will not come back next year."
Meanwhile, Los Angeles FC (LAFC) is one of the fastest-growing teams in MLS, having won the championship within just seven seasons. This success is closely linked to coach Steve Cherundolo, who made history by securing both the Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup in his first season. With such high standards, if Gerardo Martino accepts the role, he will face a considerable challenge.
However, LAFC boasts a strong and ambitious squad capable of competing for all titles. With dynamic forwards Denis Bouanga and Son Heung-min, the team promises an explosive attacking style. Should Gerardo Martino officially join, these stars could become key figures in LAFC’s quest for major trophies in the new season.
