Ahead of the crucial match between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia in the 2026 World Cup Asian qualifiers, the Indonesian public is buzzing over the announcement that a Kuwaiti referee team will officiate the game.
Many express concerns that this decision might affect fairness since both teams come from the Middle East region. However, Indonesia's coach Patrick Kluivert has firmly stated he is not intimidated and urged his team to maintain a fighting spirit.
At today’s official press conference, Kluivert remained calm amid numerous questions about FIFA appointing a Kuwaiti referee for the match at King Abdullah Sports City. “It doesn’t matter where the referee comes from; what matters is their awareness that this is a high-level match requiring absolute fairness,” the Dutch strategist shared.
He also emphasized that his team will not make excuses if the result is unfavorable: “I’m not looking for reasons to justify anything. FIFA selects the referees, and our job is to play. We don’t care who officiates; we just need to perform our role well.”
When asked about pressure from potentially controversial referee decisions, Kluivert responded decisively: “I am not afraid. Being afraid means showing weakness. We believe the referee will manage the game honestly, impartially, and according to the rules.”
The former Dutch star also pointed out that the most important thing for Indonesian players now is mentality and courage: “We must be confident but still respect our opponents. If you show fear, the other side gains a psychological advantage. The whole team must demonstrate resilience and remain unshaken in any situation.”
According to Patrick Kluivert, the match against Saudi Arabia is not just a tactical battle but also a test of mental strength and focus. “We understand their strength, especially playing at home. But if we keep calm and focused, we can definitely cause an upset,” he affirmed.
The Dutch head coach also mentioned that throughout the preparation process, he has especially focused on training the players’ mindset and fighting spirit. “Physical fitness and tactics are one thing, but mentality is the decisive factor. We need to keep a cool head in every circumstance.”
With his composed demeanor and strong message, Patrick Kluivert has instilled a resilient fighting spirit in his players ahead of kickoff in Jeddah. This is particularly significant given the referee Ahmed Al-Ali (Kuwait) is seen as a 'nemesis' of Indonesia, having officiated their humiliating 0-4 loss to Vietnam in 2021.
