Identifying the replacement coach newly appointed for Vietnam U23

SLNA Club has officially announced the appointment of Văn Sỹ Sơn as head coach.

SLNA Club officially appointed Mr. Văn Sỹ Sơn as head coach during preparations for the 7th round of the 2025/26 V.League. After coach Phan Như Thuật stepped down from the head coach position, the management of Sông Lam Nghệ An decided to appoint Mr. Văn Sỹ Sơn as the new head coach.

Following his resignation due to poor results in the early rounds of the V-League, coach Phan Như Thuật was called up to the Vietnam U23 team. The former SLNA head coach will serve as one of the technical assistants to the acting head coach Đinh Hồng Vinh during the October training camp.

Coach Văn Sỹ Sơn, 53 years old from Nghệ An, is the son of former football star Văn Sỹ Chi. He has two older brothers, Văn Sỹ Ngọc and Văn Sỹ Hùng, and younger siblings Văn Sỹ Thủy and Văn Sỹ Linh, all of whom were well-known players for Sông Lam Nghệ An. Coach Văn Sỹ Sơn spent almost his entire playing career at Sông Lam Nghệ An.

He served as the team captain from 2004 until he transferred to Hà Nội T&T Club in 2007. Together with Sông Lam Nghệ An, he won two V.League titles, one National Cup, and three National Super Cups.

After retiring from playing, coach Văn Sỹ Sơn worked as an assistant coach at Hà Nội from 2008 to 2020. He was appointed head coach of Quảng Nam in August 2022 and led the club to win the 2023 National First Division, securing promotion to the 2023/24 V.League season. In the 2024/25 season, coach Văn Sỹ Sơn helped Quảng Nam maintain their league status.

Like coach Phan Như Thuật, coach Văn Sỹ Sơn is currently enrolled in the professional football coaching course Pro/AFC/VFF.

Coach Văn Sỹ Sơn officially began his coaching role at Sông Lam Nghệ An on October 7 and will make his debut against Công an Hà Nội at V.League on October 18, 2025, at Vinh Stadium.
